A subsidiary of engineering contractor MECOM Power and Construction Limited has entered into a two-year agreement with Portuguese EV charging company I-Charging, Mobilidade Electrica, S.A for the exclusive rights to distribute, promote and sell its ‘Blueberry’ brand charging stations in Macau, Hong Kong and Mainland China.

According to a Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the deal was signed on June 7 with MUCharging (Macau) Limited, a MECOM indirect wholly-owned subsidiary mainly engaged in the provision of EV charging services.

Established in 2019 and based in Porto, Portugal, I-Charging specialises in electric mobility, with the distribution deal focused on its ‘Blueberry’ charging stations brand, namely its blueberry, blueberry Plus and blueberry Cluster chargers.

‘The Products have a power range that goes from 50 kilowatt (kW) to 600 kW with a direct current charger of output up to 1,000 volts, providing ultra-fast charging solutions. The “blueberry CLUSTER” product family is for fleet charging offering simultaneous charging for up to four EVs,’ MECOM stated.

‘Subsequent to entering into the Distribution Agreement, the Group will have
access to a more comprehensive range of EV charging infrastructure and technical know-how in high power EV chargers’.

MECOM is mainly engaged in the provision of construction services, including construction and fitting out works, high voltage power substation construction and provision of facilities management services, but has diversified its construction business to cover the provision of EV charging solutions and system services last year.

The group headed by Kuok Lam Sek has reported a revenue increase of about 30 per cent year-on-year in 2021 to some MOP912 million (US$112.8 million), with net profits more than doubling to MOP126.4 million.

MECOM has also secured several contracts for the provision of EV charging systems for around 5,100 private and public parking spaces in Guangdong Province, Macau and other places in the Greater Bay Area, including for design, supply, installation, operation and maintenance services of EV charging facilities.

The group considered that the new agreement with the Porto-based EV charging company could provide “additional revenue”, create synergies and opportunities with its existing businesses and further expand and develop its scope of business in the Greater Bay Area.
